From August 10th to 12th, 1999, a technical meeting entitled”Information Technology Research:Test Beds for Collaborative Solutions to Western Hemisphere Problems”was held at the Hotel Camino Real”Las Hadas” in Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico. This meeting was sponsored jointly by the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United States National Science Foundation (NSF).
Technical resources and compelling social and economic factors create apolitical imperative for American States to collaborate in information science projects.
This workshop brought together leading scientists to describe a program of Western Hemisphere collaboration in computing to benefit society, harness powerful economic and demographic forces, and produce a compelling and realizable development plan that will be instituted and realized by governments and other agencies.
The workshop organizers have prepared a document entitled “Using Information Technology to Solve Western Hemisphere Problems” ( MS-WORD
/ HTML ) which sets out some of the goals which we hoped to achieve.
