FLORA (FLuent Oral Reading Assessment):    FLORA is a program that automatically assesses students’ oral reading fluency, the most efficient and predictive measure of children’s reading proficiency.   It addresses school districts’ and individual teachers’ needs to screen students each school year to identify students that require interventions, and the need to monitor progress in response to interventions. Elementary school teachers across the U.S. spend up to 6 days each school year assessing students’ reading proficiency. FLORA is the only automatically assesses students’ oral reading fluency.

My Science Tutor: MyST is an intelligent tutoring system in which students have natural spoken dialogs with a virtual science tutor about science being taught in classrooms.   It is designed as a supplement to classroom science instruction that teachers can use to improve student motivation and science achievement through individualized and adaptive instruction, with students learning how to engage in scientific discourse.  MyST was developed under NSF and IES support (approximately $3M from NSF and $6M from Department of Education’s IES since 2007).  During the past 9 years, 140 tutorial dialog sessions, lasting 15 to 20 minutes, have been developed and evaluated in 8 areas of 3^rd, 4^th and 5^th grade science.   While we envision MyST as a supplement to any science curriculum aligned to national standards, it was developed and evaluated in classrooms that using the Full Option Science System (FOSS).

HELP Math is an engaging interactive multimedia mathematics intervention for grades 3 through 8, aligned to Common Core Math standards.  It is designed to address teachers’ needs to provide individualized and adaptive instruction to English learners and other struggling students to improve their math achievement It embeds evidence-based instructional strategies and targeted accommodations into a comprehensive curriculum and customizable digital media library.

MindStar Books is an intelligent tutoring system designed to improve students’ science learning, their ability to reason about science, and their reading proficiency.  It is designed to provide teachers with an efficient tool for supplementing classroom science learning while simultaneously improving students’ reading proficiency.  In each MSB, the virtual agent  a) presents students with narrated multimedia science explanations, b) assesses their understanding of the science through thoughtful  multiple choice questions that provide formative feedback following both correct and incorrect answers ( with a hint and second choice following incorrect first choices), c) uses speech recognition to help students learn to read sentences, accurately, fluently and expressively,  in short text passages that include the science vocabulary and concepts they are learning.
